Adhering to relaxation techniques. Deep breathing and muscle relaxation exercises can help lessen stress and reduce the risk of symptom flare-ups.
Engaging in hobbies and activities. Pursuing interests and activities that bring you joy and relaxation may help you alleviate stressors and refocus your outlook.

Setting realistic goals for yourself. Small goals add up to big changes. Work on them a little at a time.
Being active. Exercise, physical activity, or participation in activities that you've enjoyed may help boost your mood.

The role of nutrition in managing hidradenitis suppurativa (HS)
There is increasing evidence that diet plays a role in HS symptoms. Aside from the connection between obesity and increased HS severity, certain ingredients in foods may also play a role in HS.

Diet/nutrition Facts
- Dairy and refined carbohydrates have been linked to the follicle blockage found in HS
- Excessive carbohydrate consumption can also increase inflammatory factors within your body
- 65% of people with HS who have used diet to try and manage their HS symptoms reported that the changes helped

GETTING ACTIVE

Getting active
Physical activity can support weight loss, which may alleviate HS symptoms, and can also help reduce inflammation in your body. Activities like swimming or yoga may be preferred since these activities can limit sweating and friction on your skin.

Physical activity facts
- Research shows it’s important to get all four types of exercise: endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility
- According to the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, you should do muscle-strengthening activities at least two days a week and moderate-intensity aerobic exercises for at least two and a half hours a week
- While these guidelines can be helpful, you should tailor your physical activity to your life and your own personal abilities and bandwidth
